The Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) of the Abia State State University, Professor Godwin Iheanyichukwu Nwaogwugwu Emezue, is an illustrious son of Umuajameze, Ezeleke Autonomous Community, Umuopara in Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State.
Professor Godwin Emezue’s academic journey started at Amafo Isingwu Primary School, where he bagged his First School Leaving Certificate in 1974. He later attended Community Secondary School, Isingwu, Umuahia, where he sat for his West African Senior School Certificate Examination in 1981. Prof. Emezue equally proceeded to the then Imo (now Abia) State University, Uturu, where he obtained his Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature with second class upper division in 1988. In his quest to have quality mastery of English Language studies, he got admitted to the University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos State and in 1991, where he bagged his Master of Arts in English. His unquenching zeal and zest to get to the apex of academics and impart knowledge to his students made him to earn his PhD (English) from the University of Calabar, Cross River State in 2011.
It is interesting to note that Professor Emezue got his first appointment as an academic staff in the Department of English Language and Literature, Abia State University in 1994 as an Assistant Lecturer. Through hard work, dedication, commitment and determination, he rose through other ranks with much accolades. Most significantly, on April 11, 2019, he got promoted to the prestigious rank of a full professor, which was backdated to take effect from 2016. As a prodigious scholar with erudition, Professor Emezue has to his credit, numerous published articles in quality journals, series of chapters in mainline books, a monograph (Tetfund sponsored) and 4 textbooks, covering areas of Discourse Analysis, Pragmatics, Semantics, Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Linguistic Stylistics. He is the editor to various reputable journals and a recipient of many meritorious awards.
As a task-oriented academic, Professor Emezue has served and still serving in various capacities within and outside his primary academic constituency, Abia State University, where the content of his scorecard is inspiringly intimidating and commendable. Prior to now, this renown academic and celebrated administrator was the Academic Liaison Officer, Uyo Study Centre of the Institute for Distance Education (IDEA) from 2000 to 2002, former chairman of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Abia State University Branch (2002-2004), Hall Warden (2005), Hall Master (2006-2007), Acting Head of Department, English Language and Literature (2005-2006), Director, Institute for Distance Education (IDEA) (October 2006–2008), Director, General Studies [GST] from October 2008 to 2009, Dean, Student Affairs (July 2009-February, 2010), Director, Institute for Arts & Science [IAS] from 2016 to 2017, Head of Department, English Language and Literature from 2017 to 2021 and the University Public Orator from 2017 to 2021 and just recently, he was appointed the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) of the institution.
Outside the confines of Abia State University, Prof. G. I. N Emezue, a consummate academic has also served as a visiting lecturer, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State in 2011, External Assessor (Academic Staff, Principal Lecturership) Abia State Polytechnic, Aba in 2018, External Assessor (Professorship), Babcock University, Ogun State and Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) Item Generation Resource Person since 2016.
Suffice it to say that Professor Emezue is a God-fearing man with towering credentials and has served and still serving God in various capacities both in his denomination – The Apostolic Church Nigeria and other Christian groups such as the Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship International. Prof. Emezue is truly an Ambassador for Christ and heaven-conscious believer who believes unrepentantly in the saving grace of our lord Jesus Christ.
Prof. Godwin Emezue is always guided with the philosophy of life that “difficulty does not mean impossibility in one’s endeavour, no matter the circumstances.” He is diligent in teaching and research. He is widely known by his students, friends and colleagues as a disciplined and determined personality and as one who discharges one’s duties with great purpose, high sense of responsibility, integrity and comradeship. For his hobbies, Prof. Emezue loves reading, playing scrabble and gardening.
Professor Godwin Emezue, who is a Professor of English, is delivered the 55th inaugural lecture of ABSU on the topic “ENGLISH? YES, BUT NOT QUITE : THE IGBO – ENGLISH BILINGUAL PARADIGM.”
Professor Godwin Iheanyichukwu Nwaogwugwu Emezue is a product of God’s grace. His early life did not ever suggest that he would be able to even attend secondary school not to talk of rising to a point of becoming a university Professor, who has now been ushered into the academic hall of fame as a distinguished Professor. Professor Emezue’s story which is still unfolding is a true evidence of God’s unfettered love garnished with unending grace and unrestrained mercy. It is even the scripture that says, “I will show mercy to whom I will show mercy and compassion to whom I will show compassion.”
