PROGRESSIVE LEADERSHIP IN ACTION

A Leader is someone who knows the way, shows the way, plans the way and leads the way.* Leaders Respect themselves, Respect others and take Responsibility for all their actions. The Greatest Art of Leadership is mentoring. True Leaders do not seek followers, followers are attracted to them. Leadership success is measured by the success of your successors.

On Friday, 19th June, 2020, the Vice-Chancellor, *Distinguished Professor E. Uche Ikonne* personally made a post on this platform drawing the  attention of members of the University Community to the *TETFUND NATIONAL RESEARCH FUND 2020 GRANTS CYCLE: CALL FOR CONCEPT NOTES.*

To some, it was a big surprise that the notice came from the Vice-Chancellor himself, but to close watchers of the Pragmatic and Progressive Administration of the Vice-Chancellor, Distinguished Professor E. Uche Ikonne, since inception in 2015, the action is a practical expression of the Charismatic Leadership, Research-Oriented and Openness of the Administration.

This action of the Vice-Chancellor can be analysed in three ways:

🔸 It shows the great importance the Vice-Chancellor attaches to Research and Research activities in the University.

🔸 It shows the Progressive mindset and openness of the Vice-Chancellor towards the progress of his colleagues and growth and development of Academicism.

🔸 It therefore, calls for reciprocity from Staff
through loyalty, dedicated and efficient service delivery.

This action of the Vice-Chancellor, Distinguished Professor E. Uche Ikonne, particularly at this period of COVID-19 lockdown, when schools are shut, depicts the large heartedness and progressive mindedness of tbe digital and visionary Vice-Chancellor, even when some other Vice-Chancellor’s might have acted otherwise. *He therefore, deserves huge commendation.*

Recall, that at the inception of the University Administration, the “Apostle of Our Story Must Change” and Vice-Chancellor, Distinguished Professor E. Uche Ikonne, promised to establish a Research-Oriented Administration.

So far, the story change in the University’s Research Activities include:

🔸 Sponsorship of 38 Research topics by TETFund amounting to Millions of Naira.

🔸 Sponsorship of another 43 Research topics in the University by TETFund, unprecedented in the University and one of the highest number of sponsorships by TETFund in any University in Nigeria.

🔸 Emergence of the University as one of the 39 winners of the National Research Fund in Nigeria, amounting to Millions of Naira.

🔸 Setting up of work stations in almost all Departments in the University.

🔸 Setting up of several functional Research teams led by Senior Academics in the University and so on.
