It was a moment of glory and testimonies on the goodness and mercies of God during the Non- Denominational thanksgiving service to celebrate the Vice-Chancellor, Distinguished Professor E. Uche Ikonne’s 4th year in office.
A visibly enthused Vice-Chancellor, accompanied by his wife, Lady (Barrister) Uzoamaka Uche Ikonne, President, Abia State University Women Association (ABSUWA) and members of the University Management, marched into the University Auditorium amidst cheers and applause from the audience drawn from the University Community.
The Vice-Chancellor while sharing his testimony accompanied by wife, thanked all who has cooperated with his administration so far, explaining that it was God’s grace through the instrumentality of the Governor and Visitor to the University, Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, Ph.D that brought him into office as Vice-Chancellor, and that he took a decision to serve God and do only what is right as the Vice-Chancellor.
Looking back in his “Story Must Change” mandate” he says “God has helped the Administration and will also help everyone who joins the change train to make the University better”
Professor Ikonne specifically thanked His Excellency, the Governor and Visitor to the University, Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, Ph.D for his unprecedented moral and financial support which he says the University has benefited so much from.
The roll call of others, whom the elated Vice-Chancellor, Distinguished Professor E. Uche Ikonne expressed his gratitude to include:
• The Senate for their support in spite of obvious challenges, noting that out of 48 months of the Administration, the Senate had 45 regular Sessions, which all experienced robust deliberations to make the University better.
• The Students for their peaceful conduct throughout the academic session especially during the Student’s Union Government election.
• Teaching and Non Teaching Staff including the respective unions in the University for helping to maintain an uninterrupted academic session.
He particularly applauded the support of all the former Vice-Chancellors, who so much believed in him and has always been there during Senate and other programs of the University, as well as ABSUWA for helping to increase the spiritual content of the University, stressing that the Administration never sectionalize or victimize anybody, but ensured that equity and fairness applies at all times in dealing with issues affecting staff.
Counting the blessings of the Administration, the Vice-Chancellor stated that there are numerous achievements to thank God for especially for:
The uninterrupted academic activities which ensures that students graduate as at when due.
Expansion of academic program with the introduction of new courses and full accreditation of programs of the University.
Full equipment of all Laboratories in every department.
Increased NUC quota for admission
The highly improved Inaugural Lecture series which stood at 19th when assumed office to 53rd presently.
The first ever Alumni Convocation which have a set the pace for other Universities to follow.
Improvement in the Postgraduate programs
Staff welfare and promotions among others.
He concluded by donating a Sienna bus to the Student Union Government (SUG) in fulfillment of his promise to them and announced in accordance with the directive of the Executive Governor, and Visitor to the University, automatic employment as a Graduate Assistant to the Lady, Oluchi Okala, who made ABSU and the State proud by coming out with first class in the Faculty of Law 2018/2019 session and first class in the 2018/2019 Law School session.
Earlier in a homely, Venerable Ugochukwu Ihechukwu preaching on the topic ‘God will perfect his work” explained that when God starts a work or project in the life of any man, or in any nation he surely competes it.
He noted that for every work of God, there are always challenges and to overcome, one must continue to work, watch and pray and worship God in the midst of the challenges, praying that the work which God has started through his servant, Professor Ikonne in changing the story of the University must be perfected, as he acknowledges and trust in God always.
The President of ABSUWA and wife of the Vice-Chancellor, Lady (Barrister) Uzoamaka Uche Ikonne, on behalf of the Association used the occasion to empower 5 (five) less privileged persons with some cash gifts to enable them support their small scale business while appreciating some members of ABSUWA with other gifts for their exceptional services.
In a vote of thanks, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, and Chairman Ceremonials Committee Professor O. M. Ogbulu, thanked the Vice-Chancellor for the positive changes and achievements he brought to bear in the University and appreciated all that made out time to attend the event.
This year’s Non-Denominational Thanksgiving Service was unique as it was spiced with Christmas carols and nine lessons, with the members of University Management, wife of the Vice-Chancellor, Chairman of ASUU and SSANU and the SUG President reading the different lessons during the service.
