Eighty Two (82) Doctors of Optometry have been inducted by the Abia State University, Uturu, during her 24th Induction Ceremony for the 2017/2018 batch of Doctors of Optometry ( O.D).

In his opening remarks, the Vice Chancellor, Professor E. Uche Ikonne, represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (DVC), Administration, Professor I. Elekwa, congratulated the Parents/Guardians , the lecturers, the inductees, for the completion of a successful academic programme, that produced the new Doctors of Optometry, noting that not all who started the program, were able to complete it.
He advised them to improve on the knowledge they have acquired during their training in the University, by specializing in particular areas, and identifying with the relevant Professional bodies of their calling.

The Vice Chancellor expressed displeasure at the attitude of graduates of Professional disciplines, who exempt themselves from the University convocations after induction, and stressed the need for full participation in the convocation ceremony of the University by all the inductees for their set, where they will receive their degree certificates, and fully accorded recognition as graduates of the Institution.

Also speaking, the Provost of the College of Medicine and Health Sciences, Professor C. Aluka, and the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Professor O. C. Ahuama, in their separate remarks, noted that induction is just the beginning of another phase in their chosen career, and challenged the inductees to practice within the scope of the Profession with the fear of God, and be good ambassadors to the University.

Earlier, the Head of Department of Optometry, Dr Udo A. Ubani, specifically thanked the Vice Chancellor for finding him worthy of the appointment, while appreciating the contributions and support of the Provost of the college, Dean of the Faculty, and his colleagues in the Department, that resulted in the full accreditation of the department, describing ABSU Optometry clinicians as the best trained in the country and beyond.

Speaking before the oath taking ceremony, the Registrar, Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Registration board of Nigeria (ODORBN), Professor E. B Uzodike, lauded the Vice chancellor, Professor Uche Ikonne, for making Abia State University, a true center of Excellence in Nigeria, and africa as far as Optometry is concerned, and advised that the VC and members of the Management should not rest on their oars.

The high point of the event was the administration of the Optometrists oath on the 82 Inductees, as well as presentation of awards of excellence awards to those who distinguished themselves in various areas, with the best overall graduating Student, 2017/2018, going to Dr Uka Chigozirim Mark.
