WORLD POPULATION DAY

The Centre for Population Studies, Abia State University, Uturu on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, Professor E. Uche Ikonne, gladly announces the celebration of this year’s World Population Day. The World Population Day is an annual event observed on July, 11 every year. It seeks to raise awareness on global population issues. This event was established by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in 1989.

The theme of the year, 2018 event is : “ Family Planning is Human Right”. This theme is germane, especially, in our patriarchal society where women largely play second fiddle in decisions concerning their bodies with respect to reproductive health. In a nutshell, the theme calls attention to the fact that women and girls have the right to “avoid the exhaustion, depletion and danger” of too many pregnancies, too close together and too early.  “Men and women have the right to choose when and how often to embrace parenthood- if at all”.

This year’s celebration promises to be eventful as various awareness and sensitization programmes are put in place globally for today’s celebration. The Centre for Population Studies, Abia State University, Uturu, in tune with the momentum is participating in the BCA Radio ace programme: “Issues of the Moment” to be on air by 6: 30 pm today, ably represented by Dr E.O. Oti. The discussion promises to be educative and informative. Do not miss it.
