Abia State University has hit another milestone as the best Emergent Debate Team in the ongoing Pan-African Universities Debate Championships (PAUDC), where more than 100+ debating teams from universities across the continent are competing for honours.

Pan African Universities Debating Championship (PAUDC) is the biggest and Highest inter-varsity debate championship on the African continent established in 2008 by the University of Botswana Debate Masters Association. It is a platform that affords students from all universities within the continent the opportunity to discuss issues of Africa and beyond.

PAUDC is parliamentary debating tournament held in British Parliamentary Debate Format (involving four teams of two people in each debate).

The Prestigious tournament which which was virtually convened on social platforms like Discord, Facebook, WhatsApp, and the PAUDC official website, bypassing pandemic huddles Makerere University from Uganda along side other great brands and supporters like Royal Rhetorics etc, hosted the competition’s first ever virtual version.

Three ABSUDC Teams under the sponsorship of the school management were registered for the tournament which saw a very massive level of attendance as the 21st century technology has placed everyone available on.

After nine Preliminary Debate Rounds, ABSU Teams 1 and 2 Successfully made it to the elimination Rounds On very high Grounds.

ABSU First Team 1 made 17 points (out of a possible 27 piints) placing itself on level 13th on the Standings.

ABSU Team 2 made 18points and placed itself on the 7th place.

ABSU is the second Nigerian University in the Breaking List after University of Illorin and 7th in Africa after Kwameh Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and University of Witwatersrand, South Africa.

The uncommon achievement is peculiar as it is the First Appearance of ABSU in the biggest African Debating Competition.

Also note that ABSU Debate Club emerged as the Nigerian Champion at the All Nigerian Universities Debating Championship last year November where it won 6 awards including the Top Prize.

Speaking to Sir Emmanuel Shebbs, the Director of Abia State University Debating Society he said, “last year, ABSU Debate Club won overall best in Public Speaking at the All Nigerian Universities Debating Championship. This year, we are breaking the records at Pan African Universities Debating Championship as the 7th breaking team in Africa and 2nd in Nigeria. Also, the only breaking Team in South East Nigeria. Both outings were ABSU’s first bets in the debating circuits. What a mighty God we serve!”

He continued “all these could not have been possible without the magnanimous support of the management of the university led by distinguished Prof Maxwell Ogbulu. He is a debate man. He loves and encourages meritorious achievements which was why the story of excellence is continuing. He has already sent me a congratulatory message and he is optimistic to see us win laurels from this all-important Pan African Universities Debating Championship”.
