VC PARLEYS ABSU STAFF UNIONS FOR A FORWARD


The Vice Chancellor, Distinguished Professor O. M Ogbulu has hit the ground running with his first meeting with the Executives of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU- ABSU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU- ABSU), Non Academic Staff Union ( NASU- ABSU) and the Non- Academic Technicians (NAT- ABSU) to chart the way forward on the lingering strike action of workers and other internal challenges of the University.
Addressing the Union members, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Ogbulu, appealed to them to suspend the strike action for School activities to resume, so that the administration could get support to address salary issues and other matters of staff and students.According to him, “As Stakeholders in the University, there is need for all to make sacrifices to ensure that these challenges are addressed so that the University can move forward to other issues affecting the University” and appealed to them to give the new administration a chance to address these matters.
While thanking the Governor and Visitor to the University, Okezie Ikpeazu, PhD, for his appointment as the 8th substantive Vice Chancellor of the University, he maintained that calling off the strike will be an indication of goodwill to the administration and the Governor/Visitor to the University, and then they could watch the positive response that will follow, especially with the recent support being given to other tertiary Institutions in the State, to help them off set backlog of salaries by the Government.  
He further urged them to call off the strike so that the administration could continue the promotion exercise for staff, by convening the A&PC meeting, which the last administration scheduled to hold, but was suspended due to the strike action.
The Vice Chancellor assured the Union members that the payment of Staff Salaries and welfare, remain a topmost priority of his administration, and called on them to support and partner the administration for the overall interest of the University.
In their separate responses on behalf of their respective Unions, the Chairman, ASUU- ABSU, Dr V. U Nkemdirim, Chairman, SSANU, Mr Ojo Ezichi, and Canice Onuoha, Chairman, NASU, thanked the new Vice Chancellor, Professor O. M Ogbulu, for convening this early meeting with the Unions, and promised to take his requests to their congresses, while pledging their support for the administration.
In a vote of thanks, the former Dean, Faculty of Enviromental Sciences, and member, Board of Trustee to ASUU- ABSU, expressed appreciation to the Vice Chancellor for the Inaugural meeting, and assured him of the support of the Unions.
Present at the meeting were the Registrar, Acho Elendu,  the Bursary Chuks Vine Nwaogwugwu, who in their separate contributions, joined the Vice Chancellor to appeal to the Unions to call off the strike to pave way for immediate actions that will address some of the Challenges, while the leaders were also requested to reach out to their members  to come and fill the  Staff nominal roll form, being circulated in the University
