According to Bruce (2006), Ethics is a study dealing with what is good or bad, good or evil, duty or moral obligation.
Idogbe (2012) argues that Ethics of the Administrative performance is among the basic foundations for doing the work efficiently and effectively and an important issue for the Administrator to carry out his/her duties. With the expansion of Educational Institutions and augumentation of their responsibilities, each establishment can embrace skilled ethical rules and policies different from the other. This is because every function has its own unique functional ethics to be observed by the workers. Moreover, the commitment of professional workers to professional ethics motivates them to carry out their work according to rules, regulations, instructions and academic standards in clear relationship between their leaders and faculty members. Therefore, it is clear that the ethics of the profession is the point of evaluation of a worker and setting on the right path towards fulfilling the required tasks faithfully.
Furthermore, Code of ethics and behavior guidelines are very germane in order to provide an atmosphere which does not infringe on the corporate rights of Universities to exercise the mandates stipulated in the statutes establishing them, nor allow any ambiguities to exist in the interpretation of the rights and responsibilities of members of staff in the exercise of their duties, their relationship with the University and among themselves. It also provides guide-posts firmly planted in order to guide and circumscribe behaviour at work and has great potentials of producing more dignified work consciousness among staff of the University, as well as, improving productivity and quality service. Ethics simply put, is doing the right thing right, all the time.
It should be noted that the violation of these code of ethics by staff of the University may generate disciplinary actions but above all, they prevent reputational damage to the academic Community.
It seems plausible to posit that any Institution whole rules of engagement are not underscored with Ethical Principles constitute an experience in futility, since both in the long and short terms they would not be beneficial to the society.
An efficient University Educational system can be considered as one of the greatest assets any society can have, as a dysfunctional University system often leads to a malfunctional society.
The University as a citadel of knowledge is uniquely designed to enhance progressive learning, training and skill development to meet the dynamic human and social needs and challenges. So pictured, its primary purpose is not just to satisfy mere intellectual curiosity, but to build up the capacity and capabilities for research discovery, strategic thinking and talent driven entrepreneurship.
Though the nations Educational system has achieved so much, it is equally laden with numerous weaknesses and challenges which seem to affect its desire to offer appropriate leadership to the society and to fully accept its normative functions of Teaching, Research and Community service.
Some of these numerous challenges include amoral behavior, poor work ethics, lack of appropriate mission and vision etc.
Abia State University is one of the few Universities in the country with a well spelt-out and articulated Code of Ethics, with highly disciplined Staff and responsible Students.
Therefore, to ensure progressive and excellence-driven University Educational system in the 21st Century, *ETHICS IS THE WAY TO GO*
*ABSU: Setting the Pace*.
